The "3-3-3 rule" for cats is a guideline for new owners to understand a cat's adjustment period: 3 days for initial decompression, 3 Weeks to start settling in. and 3 months to fell fully at home. This phased approach helps manage expectations and guides owners to be patient and supportive during the transition by providing a safe space and establishing a consistent routine.

3 days: Decompression

  • Your cat is likely to be stressed, scared, or overwhelmed.
  • They may hide, refuse to eat or drink, or have accidents.
  • What to do: Provide a quiet, safe space (like a bedroom) with food, water, and a litter box. Avoid forcing interaction and limit stimulation.

3 weeks: Settling in

  • Your cat should start to feel more comfortable and learn your routine.
  • They will begin to come out more often, and their true personality will start to show.
  • What to do: Continue to be consistent with meal times and routines. Gently start to introduce them to other family members or pets.

3 months: Feeling at home

  • Your cat should feel completely comfortable and secure in their new environment.
  • They will likely be more playful, affectionate, and engaged, forming strong bonds with you.
  • What to do: Continue to provide a consistent and loving environment, allowing them to fully be themselves.Â
